人类学家弗里德里克·巴特（1928-2016）是当代最有影响的人类学家之一。他的逝世标志着人类学一个时代的结束。中山大学人类学系和波士顿大学人类学系将于2017年6月9-10日在中山大学马丁堂召开“认同、边界与跨文化交流：纪念人类学家巴特国际学术研讨会”，邀请国内外知名学者共同总结巴特理论对当前学术研究的启发，结合国际与本土经验，探索中国人类学的方向，推动中国学术研究的国际化。
巴特一生致力于研究个人策略和社会组织之间的关系。 他最著名的学说立足于对边界的建立和商榷而非文化内涵的探讨， 彻底改写了族群认同的理论。巴特后期的主要学说可以总结为着重变迁中文化的发生性模式(generative model)，着重边界的交流理论（transactional theory）, 和着重传承的知识人类学 （anthropology of knowledge）。这些学说互相联系和渗透，但探讨依然是经典社会科学的问题，即个人和社会之间的张力。
巴特的另外一个特点就是在有生之年致力于田野调查。他分别在伊朗、巴基斯坦、苏丹、巴布亚新几内亚、巴厘岛、不丹、阿曼以及挪威等等。可以说几乎没有一个人类学家可以和他田野调查的深度和广度媲美，并且，他在每一个地点的调查都有学术论著的出版、使真正的跨文化研究成为可能。
此次会议除了邀请到波士顿大学人类学系的中国专家魏乐博教授、以及阿富汗专家、人类学词典的编者Thomas Barfield教授会拨冗参会以外，还特别邀请到巴特的遗孀，挪威著名的人类学家Unni Wikan做主题演讲。Wikan教授早期关于巴厘岛的情感人类学研究成为心理人类学的经典著作。她后期一直致力于本国少数族裔和妇女问题研究，为本国的社会政策和社会发展做出贡献。另外，我们还邀请到巴特生前好友，哈佛大学人类学系的Michael Herzfeld教授、以及和巴特在同一个地方做研究、剑桥大学的宗教人类学和基督教人类学著名教授Joel Robbins来做演讲。巴特学说的影响力超出了人类学，因此我们还邀请了社会学、政治学和历史学学者参与我们的讨论，包括哥伦比亚大学政治哲学教授Andreas Wimmer 和国内的学者等等。
