Research Interests:
The research in Wang laboratory asks how pollen tube growth is empowered and regulated to accomplish plant fertilization. Distinct from dynamic and flagellated animal sperm cells, higher flowering plant sperm cells are immotile. Pollen grains are the male gametophytes and they give rise to the fast growing pollen tube that burrows through the style and into the ovary of the pistil to deliver two immotile sperm cells to the ovules wherein lies the eggs. Therefore, pollen tube growth is featured as highly dynamic and polarized cell growth. The lab aims to know how intracellular activities are spatiotemporally orchestrated to support the asymmetric growth of pollen tubes, how a dynamic growing pollen tube tip is sculptured and maintained, and how we might exploit these processes to address the mysteries of plant polarization and development. By using a combination of advanced bio-imaging, gene editing, genetic, biochemical and mathematical modeling approaches, our long-term goal is to uncover the molecular mechanisms that govern pollen tube growth for plant fertilization and reproduction. Wang lab welcomes diverse types of research collaborations and is interested in recruiting ambitious and highly motivated postdoctoral research associates and postgraduate students to join us to explore the mysteries of plant fertilization and reproduction.
